SIOUX FALLS, SD--Gladys M. Doyle, 96, a former Piedmont resident, died at her Sioux Falls home on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Gladys was born in Wesley, Iowa on December 12, 1912 the daughter of Louis and Minnie (Kaufman) Matern. She grew up with 5 brothers and sisters on farms in the Wesley and Algona Iowa area and graduated from Algona High School in 1930. She retired from St, Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN over 30 years ago and spent most of her remaining years in the Piedmont, SD, area. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont and participated in the sewing club and many other volunteer organizations. She was an incredible seamstress who sewed for her family and friends, created quilts, did needlepoint a wonderful cook. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands Clarence Bergstresser and Lawrence Doyle, sisters Ellenor and Arlene and brothers Michael and Hugh. Grateful for having shared her life are her 6 children: Cliff (Trish) Bergstresser Bedford TX, Mike (Sue) Bergstresser Rapid City, SD, Pat (Paula) Doyle Sidney, NE, Suzanne Doyle Tucson, AZ, Tim (Pam) Doyle Plainview, MN, Gail Doyle, Sioux Falls, and her sister Patricia Dinwiddie Woodlawn, CA. Gladys has 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 23, at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont with Father Mark McCormick presiding. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Good Samaritan Meadow Stone Apartments fund raising project to build a four season room for the residents and can be sent to Karen Mercural, Manager, 5324 W 49th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57106.
