Gladys Olson, age 103, of Rapid City, formerly of Madison, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Golden Living Center of the Black Hills, Rapid City, SD. Gladys Barbara Sipe was born December 6, 1909, at Aladdin, WY to Lewis and Margaret (Baker) Sipe. The family moved to Table Mountain, WY and she attended Oak Grove country school and later moved to Sundance, WY where she attended high school and worked for the Zanes Hotel and area ranch homes. Gladys married Royce Olson on November 7, 1927, at Belle Fourche, SD and they traveled by train to Madison where Royce lived. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1928. They had two sons, Francis Royce and Dale Julius. Gladys worked as a pastry cook at Dakota State University for 25 years. They returned to Sundance for five years where Royce managed a clothing store before retiring back to Madison. She enjoyed baking, sewing, crocheting, and in her later years, playing cards and bowling. Gladys was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Madison Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1992, three sisters and four brothers. Survivors include two sons, Bud (Audrey) Olson and Dale (Marilyn) Olson both of Rapid City, four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Visitation will from 7 until 9 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Madison. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison.
