Obituary

Rapid City - Glenn Adam Bammerlin died peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the age of 91 years at the Golden Living Center-Prairie Hills, Rapid City. Glenn was born November 5, 1922, the second of five children, to Edward H. and Iva [Sherman] Bammerlin at Burton, Nebraska. Glenn attended school rural school in the Burton Valley for 8 years and then attended Keya Paha County High School, graduating with the class of 1940. Glenn helped out on the family farm before trekking to Oregon to attend a trade school for 4 months to become a welder. He was then employed as an arc welder at Swan Island Shipyard in Portland, Oregon from April of 1942 until May of 1944 when he entered the military. Glenn served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and received the American Victory World War II medal, European African Middle Eastern Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button while serving in the Signal Corps. He was Honorably Discharged on May 28, 1946 from the U.S. Naval Personnel Separation Center in Shelton, Virginia. Glenn and Roma Vakiner were acquainted back in grade school and they met and fell in love while attending dances in Burton, Nebraska. They were married on June 29, 1947 at Norfolk, Nebraska. Glenn and Roma had no children, but they did love and cherish their pets, especially their dog Shasta. Glenn then attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration-with an emphasis in Accounting, graduating in May of 1950. He then entered the insurance profession as a Broker and Adjuster and with this work in the insurance industry took them to Marshalltown, Iowa, Sioux City, Iowa, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Rapid City, SD. Glenn loved his work and would often tell of the myriad of ways clients would try to burn their houses down to collect insurance. Glenn and Roma initially retired to Sun City, Arizona, spending many of the hot summers in Pacific City, Oregon. While in Arizona, admitting that golf just didn't keep him busy enough, he went back to school to get his Real Estate License, while this did not turn out to be a very lucrative adventure, it did keep him busy. I don't think that anyone can recall that Glenn actually ever sold a house. Glenn and Roma made lasting friendships at each and every location and then later moved back to Rapid City, SD. Roma died June 12, 2011 in Rapid City. Glenn then became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Prairie Hills where he resided until his death. Survivors include two sisters: Lila and husband Art Heerten of Springview, NE and Jeanne Graff of Coulee Dam, WA; sister-in-law: Darlene Bammerlin of Buffalo, OK and 16 nieces and nephews. Glen was preceded in death by his parents, his best friend and wife of 63 years: Roma, and two brothers: Willis and Gerald. Visitation will be Friday, February 21 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. There will be Graveside Services at 2:00 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis with Colonel Army Chief Chaplain [Ret.] Herb B. Cleveland officiating with full Military Honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post #1273 and South Dakota Army National Guard. An online guestbook for Glenn may be signed at www.osheimschmidt.com
