HILL CITY | Gordon W. Collins, 82, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at home. Gordon Wesley Collins was born November 24, 1929 at Athol, SD to Floyd and Laura [Reed] Collins. He then enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1949 and served as a Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He married Halley [Celso] Jimenez in October of 1952. Together they had 10 children. Gordon served Civil Service at Ellsworth Air Force Base at Rapid City and worked for the BIA in Fort Thompson, SD. He moved to Hill City in 1969 and owned and operated Skelly Gas Station and G-Bobs Bar for many years. He worked at Rushmore Forest Products for 28 years as a heavy equipment operator/diesel mechanic, and retired from there. Survivors include sons, Willie Collins, Henderson, Nev., Gordon (Jill) Collins, Phoenix, Ariz., Mike Collins, Joe Collins and Daniel (Erin) Collins, all of Hill City, and Thomas Collins, Rapid City; daughters, Patricia Noel, Glendale, Ariz., Teresa (Kenny) Novotny and Christine (Marv) Matkins, all of Hill City, and Jean Damon-Harmon; 30 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife "Halley" Collins in 2001, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, four brothers, three sisters, and his parents. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the funeral home with Deacon Pat Coy officiating. Burial will follow in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post #1273 and South Dakota National Guard.
