Obituary

RAPID CITY | Grete Bodogaard, renowned Norwegian textile artist and longtime South Dakota resident, died peacefully in the Black Hills on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014. Well respected and deeply loved by many, Grete was diagnosed with brain cancer in June 2014. Born August 16, 1946, in Bodo, Norway, to Jan and Mary Bodogaard, Grete began her artistic studies early in life. Her trainings took her throughout Europe, and cemented a love of travel and regional techniques. In 1969, Grete married Sam Heikes and immigrated to Vermillion, SD. While here, her son was born, and she returned to Norway temporarily for the birth of her daughter. Following her divorce, Grete moved to the Black Hills, which she asserted reminded her of Norway. During her career, Grete had many commissions and taught adult and youth art programs for decades. Grete was also recognized with the South Dakota Governor's Award for Creative Achievement. In 1998, Grete married film maker Charles Nauman. Their most recent home and studio space is a historic bank in the town of Volin. She will forever be known for her love of swimming in hot springs, cooking gourmet meals, and sharing her incredible perspective on art, life, and humanity. Grete was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Charles; brothers, Terje Bodogaard and Jan Oscar Bodogaard; her children Eirik Heikes and Sunni Heikes-Knapton; her stepchildren, Talli Nauman and David Nauman; her grandchildren, Maida Knapton, Katherine Heikes and Finley Knapton; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City. Contributions can be made to the Dahl Arts Center Bodogaard Account.
