IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Guriene Maxine
Schartz
October 8, 1928 – April 13, 2024
Rapid City – Guriene Schartz, 95, died Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Fountain Springs Healthcare Center.
Guriene Maxine Muchow was born October 8,1928 at home in Hartford, SD to Elsie and Kelley Muchow. She was the eldest of three children. She would walk or ride her bike to country school and in winter when the weather was bad, her father took them to school on a bobsled with a horse. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1947. As a young girl she enjoyed roller skating, basketball, & dancing.
She was married to Leo Schartz on May 27, 1949, in Hartford, SD. They met at a country dance, and he got permission to drive her to her home after the dance. The rest, as they say, is history.
They lived and farmed in the Hartford area until they migrated to Rapid City, to Billings and then full-time to Rapid City in the summer of 1969. She started working at the Rapid City Sears store in 1972 after they thought the children were old enough and worked there until retirement.
Guriene loved playing cards and games and sharing stories during family gatherings where she would sometimes make everyone incredibly happy with her delicious peanut squares. She always decorated her home for special occasions and was a very gracious host. She enjoyed travel and had quite a collection of souvenir plates from her travels. She and Leo were lifetime members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Survived by and grateful to have shared her life are their children: Linda (Dave) Mell of Bozeman, MT, Ken, Glenn, and Keith (Andrea) of Rapid City, and Dennis (Cindy) Schartz of Gillette, WY; Her sister Marlene (Merle) Grave of Sioux Falls, sister-in-law Barb Muchow of Hartford, and sister-in-law Avis Herdina of Rapid City, 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, her brother Merle Muchow, and brother-in-law Leo Herdina.
