Obituary

Gust was born Feb. 14, 1920 in Grant County North Dakota to his Russian parents Fredrick and Christiana Alt, he lived most of his 95 years on the Alt farm near New Leipzig, North Dakota; the only exceptions being his 4 years of Army service and his time spent in his later years escaping the harsh North Dakota winters by going "south" for the winter to his home in "South" Dakota. He was always a farmer, it was his occupation, but his preoccupation was serving his God Jehovah and raising his 4 children to do the same. He is survived by those children; Nancy, Glenn, Dale and Gary and his sister Helen along with 9 Grand Children and 14 Great Grand Children. Life as a North Dakota farmer was never easy but Gust never did anything half heartedly or the easy way, but he made a success of farming even surviving the Great Depression. He was contacted by Jehovah's Witnesses and he liked what he heard about Gods purpose for mankind's future from the Bible and so in 1958 he dedicated his life to doing what Jehovah asked of him. Life in North Dakota as one of Jehovah's Witnesses wasn't easy but Gus's faith never wavered. In those days they were some distance from other witnesses, so were considered an "isolated group"; the Alt living room served as their Kingdom Hall and Gus conducted all the various meetings and arrangements to visit his neighbors in their homes to share Bible truths with them. This family group was a proving grounds for traveling representatives of Jehovahs Witnesses then known as Circuit Servants. Some familiar names that were included in those early representatives were Lon Schilling, who went on to become the Watchtower Farm Overseer and now serves on the US Branch Committee, Darrel Holman who became a District Representative until he retired and Gary Braeu who serves as an assistant to the Governing Body in New York. These all passed their endurance test on the Alt's farm in North Dakota. To his neighbors and the towns people of New Leipzig, this new faith Gus had found became known as the "Gust Alt Religion" and that it was; it really was "his" religion and was till he passed away Oct. 23, 2015. Like many men of faith such as Abraham, Isaac, Lot and Job, Gus served his God faithfully and fully until death took him and like those men of faith, he looked forward to what Jehovah has promised all who serve him faithfully from the book of Revelation chapter 21 verse 4: '"And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." We will miss you now, but look forward to being with you again, but this time for an eternity. Memorial services will be held on Saturday November 7 at 1:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovas Witnesses, 1111 Oriole Drive in Rapid City.
