Obituary

H. Edward (Ed) Yelick died Wednesday, May 30th at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Ed was born January 17, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Edward and Evelyn Yelick. At a young age he learned the value of dependability as he had both a morning and evening paper route for many years and he was very proud of being an Eagle Scout. He met Mary Bocher in 1952 and they were married two years later. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company serving communities in Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. After thirty years of service, he retired as an assistant vice-president. Ed then formed his own government affairs business and was a well-known lobbyist. In 1994, facing some health issues, Ed and Mary decided to move to the Black Hills, a place they loved from the many summers spent camping there while living in Sioux Falls. Ed came to fish and golf, but it was not long before he was involved in many community activities. His activities included serving on the Black Hills Forest Advisory Board, the West Dakota Water Board and the Chamber of Commerce Board. In 2004 he was awarded the Chamber's George Award. For seventeen years he was on the Board of Governors for National American University. In 2000 he was chair of the first fireworks committee for the Mount Rushmore Society. He was President of Arrowhead Country Club. Ed served as chair of both the Rapid City Regional Hospital Board and the Regional Health Board. As his health deteriorated he always remained upbeat and fun to be around. Friends and family knew Ed could be counted on to be the calm, steady problem solver. He enjoyed Wednesday night cards at the club and was always ready with a joke, a good story, or his quick wit. He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughters Kathy and Cindy, his daughter-in-law Pam, his son-in-law Jim Demmel, grandchildren Julia Yelick, Megan and Nathan Demmel, Mary Yelick, and his brother Bob Yelick. He was preceded in death by his son Steve. The family will receive visitors at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 7th. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 8th, at the First Congregational Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kathleen Batchelder officiating. Following the service lunch will be served at Arrowhead Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Rapid City Regional Hospital Foundation.
