IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harold L.
"Hal" Frost, Md
August 28, 1928 – March 3, 2017
RAPID CITY - Dr. Harold L. Frost died peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Peaceful Pines Senior Living Community where he resided with his wife, Ellie, since December of last year.
Harold Lester Frost (Hal) was born on August 28, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan to Harold L. Frost and Constance B. Frost. He attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit, followed by undergraduate studies and medical school at Wayne State University. While in medical school he met a beautiful young nurse, Eleanor (Dunn) Frost and they were married in 1954.
Hal completed his internship and residency in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He also served in the Colorado National Guard 430th Hospital. His residency was interrupted for two years when he was called to active duty in the United States Army at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. Following his residency training in Denver, Hal & Ellie moved to Rapid City in 1960. Hal was a founding partner in what is now the Clinical Laboratory of the Black Hills. He practiced pathology in Rapid City for 32 years.
Hal was an avid organic gardener for many years, and religiously sorted the garbage for his composting. He also enjoyed skiing and bicycling, especially the annual Spearfish Canyon bike ride with "Hal's Angels". Reading, jig-saw puzzles and crossword puzzles were also favorite hobbies. He authored over 800 issues of the Frost Family Newsletter, a delightful chronicle that kept his large family updated on each other and entertained through the years. Thank you, Big H!
Without a doubt, his family was his greatest pleasure. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellie of Rapid City; and children Judith (Rod) Lefholz of Rapid City; Barbara (Greg) Myers of Denver; James (Judy) Frost of Rapid City; Timothy (Debora) Frost of Rapid City; Michael (Jamie) Frost of Missoula, MT; Suzanne (Frank) Solano of Scottsbluff, NE; Jonathan Frost of Kalispell, MT and Steven (Natalie) Frost of Rapid City. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren Elizabeth Chapman, Sarah Leinweber, Madeline Frost, Claire Frost, Robert Frost, Emily Ashley, Michael Frost, Daniel Frost, Libby Frost, Dominic Frost, Margaret Van Amburg, Andrew Van Amburg, Jacob Frost, Camille Andrews, David Andrews, Samuel Frost and Maxwell Frost. He also has four great-grandchildren. Hal is also survived by his sister Naomi (Sam) Aiuto of Detroit, MI and his aunt Bernice Pickarts of Boise, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation with the family will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 followed by a Christian Wake Service and Rosary at 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 10 at Blessed Sacrament Church, with Rev. Brian Lane presiding.
Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hill National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors rendered by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273.
Hal's family would like to thank the caring staff at Peaceful Pines. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Feeding South Dakota.
