Obituary

Rapid City – Harold Wayne Johnson, 94, died Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Monument Health Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Harold Johnson was born March 29th, 1930, in Madison Nebraska to Chester and Rosina Johnson.  The family eventually moved to Rapid City, SD, where Harold attended grade school, then Rapid City High School, graduating in 1948.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War and received an Honorable Discharge in 1957.

His career in the food business started in Casper, Wy, where he met the joy of his life, Jean Sewell, who was attending Beauty school there.  Jean and Harold were later married March 8th, 1955 and moved to Salt Lake City, UT.  During their stay in Salt Lake City, they were blessed with the addition of a son, David Wayne, to their family.

The family returned to Rapid City and the Black Hills in 1962, where Harold began his 34-year career with the Nash Finch Company.  Harold served as the store manager of several locations and retired from Nash Finch in 1996.  Harold began a second career with Enterprise Car Rentals in 2008, delivering many new cars to different states, finally retiring in 2021.

The family enjoyed traveling the US and fishing and camping in the Black Hills and Bighorn Mountains.  Harold enjoyed an occasional beer and playing pool with the guys and later teaching his granddaughter Hope and still later his 4 great-grandchildren how to play poker and many board games.

Harold was proceeded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jean Johnson, his mother and father, 3 brothers: Dale, Dean and Kenneth all of Rapid City.  He is survived by his son David and wife Kandis, Rapid City, Granddaughter Hope Henk and her husband Richard Henk, and his 4 great- grandchildren, Hunter, Aiden, Aliyah and Elizabeth all of Rapid City.

Arrangements have been made with the Osheim-Schmidt Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 7.

Services will be held 11:00 am Monday July 8 at Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City and burial will be 2:30 pm on Monday at the National Cemetery at Sturgis with full military honors.
