RAPID CITYHarriet J. Johnle, 88, died at Golden Living Center-Prairie Hills on Wednesday, February 3, 2010. She was born on December 8, 1921, in Oswego, NY, to Robert and Jane (Wheelcock) Emgling. She grew up in New York, married Raymond Curington and they later moved to Rapid City. She cleaned many homes in the West Boulevard area and later worked at Marows Nut House. She soon became known as the Candy Lady and she made candy during the holidays and sent it out to many different people. Harriet was also known for sending out Christmas wreaths to many people during the Christmas season. She also managed the Hillcrest Apartments at one time. Harriet was very active in the D. A. V. Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and 40 & 8. She enjoyed attending conventions for these organizations throughout the country stayed at the the Belleview Straford Hotel, infamous for the Legionaires Disease outbreak. She was very active for over 30 years with the Legions Girls State program, where she reviewed applications and arranged the bus trips for the participants. Harriet was also honored as the Citizen of the Month in Rapid City in June of 1995. She was active in Navy Mothers, the PTA and kept score for his sons Rushmore Little League teams. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and also enjoyed gardening. Survivors include 2 sons, Meade Curington, Rapid City and David Curington, Albuquerque, N. Mex; 2 grandchildren; a step-son John; 2 step-daughters, Jacque and Patrice; a sister, Eleanor Meador and several step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Johnle in 1990, her parents, 2 brothers, Robert and William and a step-son, Robert Johnle. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Dr. Ted Huffman officiating. Interment will follow in the Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Girls State. Services are under the direction of the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
