Harriet K Young

June 10, 1936 – March 18, 2026

Born to Harry and Myrtle Poss of Rapid City. The youngest of 3 daughters, Helen, Beverly and Harriet.

Harriet graduated from Central High in 1954 then went on to graduate from The National School of Business in 1955.

On July 30th 1955, she married Wilbur C. Young. They had 4 children, Guy, Paul, Amy and Jack.

She later had 7 grandchildren, Jamie Young, Joshua Teal, Jesse Young, Samantha Young, Amanda Perkins, Darin Perkins Jr. and Sunny Young. After that, came 7 great grandchildren. Stryker and Riddyk Mauck of Mobridge, Brody and Brexton Post, Marley and Macey Young all of Rapid City and Etnie Keller of Cave Junction, OR.

Harriet worked in several different fields throughout her years. She was a cook for the Triangle Fraternity House in the 80s, The Catholic Diocese of Rapid City until she retired. She then went to work part time for Leach and Pechota Law Offices, Attorneys Jim Leach and Terry Pechota. She loved all 3 of these positions and all the people she worked for and with. She loved people!

Harriet loved to cook, bake, sew, knit, and crochet. She loved having company and serving either homemade cookies or bars. She was so good at everything, but everyone especially loved her cooking and baking, so, in 1995, she put together a cookbook of all her recipes and gave copies to her family and friends.

In 1997 as a former Director of Family Life Ministries Diocese of Rapid City, she wrote A Leader’s Resource Manual for Bereavement Ministries and was published.

In 2014 Mom put together an album of her family history going back to 1592, including pictures.

What some people may not know about Harriet: In the Spring, she loved seeing her tulips and daffodils in bloom. In the Summer, she loved family picnics in her backyard, badminton, whiffle ball, croquet, and a good water fight. She was always so much fun! In the Fall, she liked giving out candy on Halloween and seeing the little kids in their costumes, raking leaves and cooking Thanksgiving dinner for her family. In the Winter, she loved making snow ice cream, ice skating, baking Christmas cookies and candies and making Christmas dinner.

Harriet passed away at Advantara St. Cloud Nursing Home with her daughter Amy by her side, reading scriptures, saying prayers and listening to Christian music, she went peacefully.

Harriet had a strong faith in God and the Catholic Church. She said her rosary often and prayed consistently for those she cared about. She was a wonderful Mother and her family was everything. She was also a very good friend.

She is survived by Guy, Paul & Dori, Amy & Darin Perkins, Jack & Heather, Jamie & Toby Mauck, Joshua & Jane Teal, Jesse Young, Sammy & Brody Post, Amanda & Tyler Keller, Sunny Young and all great grandchildren.
