RAPID CITY- Harry Louis Paulsen was born on June 27, 1930 at his grandmother's (Bertha Klug) farm, 20 miles south of Burke, South Dakota.
His parents, Harry and Rose Paulsen, resided at Okreek, South Dakota on the Rosebud Sioux reservation where his father operated a gas station and repair shop. Harry attended the Indian Day School.
The family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1939, where he attended Wilson Grade School, Cleghorn Grade School, and Rapid City High School, where he graduated in 1948.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for four years, including two years during the Korean War, commencing at the Inchon invasion and the Chosin Reservoir attack by the superior number of Chinese forces.
Upon his discharge, Harry returned to Rapid City where he worked for Donaldson's Department Store for two years before moving to southern California. He worked for Orange County Title Company, which later became First American Title Insurance Company.
Harry was employed by First American Title Insurance Company for 35 years, and also owned and operated Western Title Corporation (a title insurance agency), in Castle Rock, Colorado. He was a registered lobbyist in Denver, Colorado for a period of 10 years, and later returned to South Dakota to retire and enjoy fishing, hunting, and golfing.
Harry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen and four children: Greg Erpelding (Denver), Dawn Elgard (Rapid City), Mark Paulsen (Granby, CO), and Susan Paulsen (Castle Rock, CO); grandchildren Andrew Miller, Cheyenne Miller, Bobbi Hamm, Sarah Gerberding, Emily Gerberding, Micaela Jun, great-grandchildren Myanne Hamm and Madison Hamm. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry B. and Rose Paulsen; brother Larry Paulsen, son Steve Paulsen, and his first wife, Joan Paulsen.
A memorial service and inurnment with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on September 24, 2018 at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota. A celebration of Harry's life will be held from 4-7 p.m. on September 24, 2018 at the Rimrock Community Center at Johnson Siding, 12270 Highway 44, Rapid City, SD 57702.
