Obituary

RAPID CITY- Helen Lucille Melvin, 87, Rapid City, died Friday January 21, 2011 at the Victorian Assisted Living Center in Rapid City. Helen was born Helen Lucille Johnson in Rapid City on February 11, 1923 to Hazel [Marsh] and Fred Johnson, the third of four children. She spent most of her life in the Rapid City area with the exception of the years during WWII, when she lived at several military bases in Texas and Tennessee. She was married to Leonard James Melvin in Vernon, Texas on June 19, 1943 while Leonard was stationed there with the United States Army Air Corps. After the war ended, they returned to Rapid City where they lived together until Leonards death in 1997. She spent her final years in the company of loving friends and family in the Fountain Springs Senior Apartment Complex and in the loving care of Victorian Assisted Living staff and hospice. She will be remembered as a woman who cared deeply for family and friends and one who was quick to provide a smile, a hug, a kind word, a cake, or a batch of cookies to anyone who needed it. Her quick wit and charm will be missed by all who knew her. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and was active in the bible study program and other social circles until her health made these things too difficult. She is survived by one son, David [Diane] Melvin of Rapid City; one daughter, Susan [Ray DeGeest] Melaven of Rapid City; four grandchildren: Tamara Lengacher, Darbara VanPuffelen, Steven Ruddell, and Christopher Melvin; and four great-greandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Leonard Melvin, one brother: Donald Johnson, one half-brother: Lee Arnold, and one half-sister: Margaret Smith. Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bob Evans officiating. Inurnment will be scheduled at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
