Obituary

RAPID CITY - Helen M. Smith, 87, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at her home. Helen was born in Gordon Nebraska in 1924 to May and Sherman Huffman. She grew up in the Sturgis. Helen was married to Fred Wm. Smith on August 21, 1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. To that union 3 children were born, Barbara, Connie and Monty. They resided in Deadwood until 1954 moving to Newcastle, WY where they resided until moving to Rapid City in June of 1959. They lived at their home in Rapid City until September of 2010 before moving to Somerset Court Assisted Living Facility. While living at Somerset Court she met many great friends and loved the staff who were wonderful to her. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Helen was a very loving and caring person who loved being with family and friends. She enjoyed attending functions of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to play Bingo and other games at Somerset. She enjoyed dancing in her younger years and always enjoyed music most recently from the people coming to Somerset to perform for the residents there. She enjoyed the bus trips to Deadwood and couldn't wait to let you know when she won. She is survied by her husband Fred, Rapid City; daughter Connie (Bob) Ewing, Rapid City; son Monty (Ruthie) Smith, Tabor; two brothers Sherman (Sandy who she thought of as a daughter), Box Elder; and Bill (Martha) Huffman, Belle Fourche; 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren. We will all miss her. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 2, at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Dwight Stensgaard and Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City. Memorials have been established to the Diabetes Association and the Calvary Lutheran Church.
