RAPID CITY - Henry J. Hansen Jr, 80, died Jan 4, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Henry (Jr.) was born in January of 1932 to Henry Sr. and Lydia (Jerke) Hansen in Woonsocket. He married Thelma Tapken in Alpena in August of 1951. To this union a son, Gerald, and a daughter, Velda, were born. After leaving the farm in the early 1950s, Jr. worked road construction hauling road oil which was used to build several of the state highways in South Dakota and Montana. The family followed road construction in the summer, moving into Rapid City during the winter months. Starting about 1965 Jr. transitioned to over the road freight. From road oil, cattle, buffalo, lumber, pipe, vehicles, cement, jet fuel, steel, and brick; Jr. hauled freight from and to nearly every state in the union. Jr. purchased his first truck, a Kenworth, and later replaced it with a Peterbilt. Jr. sold his truck in 2000 and retired from driving in 2002. Jr. and Thelma spent 8 summer seasons as Custer State Park volunteers, most of the years as campground hosts. They wintered in Casa Grande, AZ for 5 years. Jr. is survived by his wife Thelma, son Gerald (Wanda) Hansen, daughter Velda (Rocky) Runeberg, granddaughters Cassy (Anthony) Raaphorst and Heather Runeberg all of Rapid City and one sister Bernice Eddy of Woonsocket. Jr. was preceded in death by his parents Henry, Sr. and Lydia Hansen and one sister Emma Neumeyer. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Winckler officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial has been established for the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund, 4550 S. Hwy 16, Rapid City, SD 57701.
