Henry M. Matt, 84, Rapid City, died at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
He was born on June 5, 1933 at the doctor's office in Wasta, SD to Joseph and Selma (Martinson) Matt.
Henry grew up on the family homestead on the Belle Fourche River. He joined the US Navy in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1956.
He married Annette Dozark in the original St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Rapid City on May 25, 1957.
Henry began his career in the grocery business at the Bean Bag Market in Rapid City, from there he went to the Commissary Market in Atlantic, IA, various Ideal Markets in Nebraska retiring from the Sioux Nation Shopping Center in Pine Ridge in 1991 after 22 years in Pine Ridge.
The family moved to Hermosa in 1995 and then to Rapid City in 2013.
Family was very important to Henry and visiting relatives on the weekend was commonplace as was camping. Hunting and fishing were his passion, however; flea markets, rummage sales and auctions were his obsession.
Henry is survived by his wife, Annette, Rapid City, three sons; DeWayne A. Matt, Rapid City, Donald K. (Jeanette) Matt, Chadron, NE and Daniel L. (Amber) Matt, Box Elder, eight grandchildren; Joshua (Samantha) Gehrels, Rose Matt, Nicholas Matt, Joseph Matt, Michael Matt, Jessica Matt, Sierra Matt, Christian (Marie) Gehrels, great grandchildren; Brenden, Charliee Lynn, Maximillian, August, Bastian, Kennedy, Fisher, four sisters in law and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Diana Lynn Gehrels, his son, Dennis Joseph Matt, two brothers and one sister.
A visitation will be held at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm with the Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00pm
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am on Wednesday, April 25 the church, followed by interment with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established by the family.
