Herbert Henry Speck Sr., 98, of Rapid City SD died peacefully in his sleep at home on September 23rd, 2025. Herb was born on October 15th 1926 in Quinn SD. Herb was the 7th child born to his parents Edward A. and Rosina (Walters) Speck.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley (Strong) Speck. They were married June 14th, 1953 in Wessington Springs SD. Herb and Shirley moved to MA where they had two sons: Herbert Jr. on March 1, 1954 of Greenland NH and Gregory of Rapid City SD.
Herbert grew up in western South Dakota and they moved to Creighton, Wall, Conata (Badlands) and Wessington Springs where the family had a farm. Herbert was drafted into the Army in 1950. He was stationed in Boston Well Fleet and Winthrop, MA. He was part of an anti-aircraft gun team. He also proudly served as an honor guard for those returning from Korea whom had fallen in battle. After his discharge he went to work as a barber in Brookline, MA. In 1970 he went to work as a machinist for A.W. Chesterton in Woburn, MA. Herb retired at the age of 67 only to return to Chesterton, working fulltime until the age of 80. He loved to work and was loved by all who knew him.
Herb was all about family. Living in MA he spent a lot of time with Shirley's family. He made sure to get back to SD whenever he could, staying in touch with his family and visiting whenever possible. After living in Stoneham, MA for 60 years he moved to Rapid City, SD to be closer to his family.
Herb enjoyed life and had a great outlook on life. He loved family, friends, horses, hunting fishing, golf. Always striving to do his best at whatever he did.
His parents had 12 children and he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Magdalena 1913, Beatrice 1914, Edward 2005, Edna 2004, Raymond 1989, Alfred 2001, Agnes 1935, Vernon 2019, Glen 1949, Dale 2004.
Herb is survived by his sister Vera (Speck) Weber, Wessington Springs, SD; his son Herb Jr. and grandchildren: Tyler and Jenni (Silverman) Speck of NH, Ashley Speck of MA, Travis and Meghan (Tomie) Speck of HI, Trevor Speck of MA; great-grandchildren: Aria, Miles, Lyra, Noelle (Tyler) and J.J. (Ashley); and his son Greg and grandchild Amber (Speck) and Bryce Lewis of SD; and great-grandchildren: Pamela and Jaxx and many other nephews and nieces.
Services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
Burial Service with full military honors will be 12:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with the Piedmont Valley American Legion Post #311 Honor Team and South Dakota National Guard Honor Team.
Arrangements are under the direction of Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
