Obituary

Herman Christopher Rausch, 91, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at a hospice house in North Richland Hills, Texas from complications of Parkinson's disease. He and his wife stayed in Texas with their daughter Julia during the winter months. Herman was born in Watkins Minnesota on June 27, 1923 to Valentine and Katherine (Holthaus) Rausch. At a young age, he moved with his family to Big Stone City, South Dakota where his family lived on the banks of Big Stone Lake. Herman was the sixth of fourteen children. He married Jane Roggenbuck, his wife of nearly 68 years, on June 19, 1947. To this union twelve children were born: Julia Archer, Theresa (& John) Victory, Charles (& Theresa), Arthur (& Marilyn), Mary (& Lorin) Brass, Frederick, Virginia (& Steve) Jorgensen, Joseph (& Theresa Scholz), Martin (& Janie), Margaret Mary (& Keith) Gilsdorf, John (& Annette Walstad), and Stacie (& Tim) Wick. He and Jane moved to Rapid City in 1961 and to rural Hermosa in 1980. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and an active member of his Hermosa parish, St Michael's Catholic Church. Except for working 2 years in the Bremerton, Washington shipyards during WWII, he worked his entire life in the monument business, the second generation of what is now a four-generation business. Herman loved sports, especially to play golf. He was a member of the Stone golf group with whom he won the "Green Jacket" three times. He also liked to travel and managed to visit all 50 States in his lifetime, as well as a few foreign countries. He is survived by his wife Jane, all twelve children, thirty grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren as well as five siblings: Jerome (& Shanti), Sr. Rose Mae OSF, Sr. Tonie OSF, Josephine (& George) Vania and Paul (& Liane). A visitation will begin at 7:00pm with a Christian Wake service at 7:30pm on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Highland Park Cemetery, Hermosa. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michael's Catholic Church Building Fund or to a Parkinson's research organization.
