IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Honour M.
Weichert
December 3, 1927 – December 10, 2015
Honour May (Kelly, Griffin) Weichert, at the age of 88, laid down her burdens and went to live in her heavenly home with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. She passed from this life on December 10 th 2015, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, with her loving husband Wendell at her side.
Honour May was born on December 3, 1927 to Ralph Mason Kelly and Honour May (McCune) Kelly in Dennison, Iowa. She was the fifth of eight children to be born into the Kelly family.
Honour May attended all 12 grades of school in Dennison, graduating in 1946. Her father pastored a circuit of churches in Dennison and Battle Center, Iowa. While in high school her father went into evangelism and the Griffin family became the pastoral family of her church. Following high school graduation, Harold Griffin and Honour May attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College in Miltonvale, Kansas. While in Miltonvale, Harold and Honour May were betrothed and married in 1948. They then moved to Marion, Indiana where they attended Marion College, and Harold completed his studies for the ministry.
The Griffins moved to Belle Fourche, SD in 1951 as their first pastoral charge. It was here that two sons, Frederick (Rick) Kelly Griffin and Rodney Kent Griffin were born. Following Harold's ordination in 1955, the family moved to Prairie City, SD, where they pastored the Beckman Memorial Wesleyan Methodist Church. In 1961 Harold passed away, following a long bout with pancreatic cancer.
While in Prairie City, Honour May was asked to teach the rural South Strool School, located one mile south of Prairie City. Upon completion of her teaching certificate, she took the position of teaching 8 grades combined in a one-room school house. When Harold became ill, Honour May completed her degree in elementary education. She graduated from Black Hills Teachers' College in Spearfish, SD in 1961.
After Harold's death, Honour May moved with her two young sons to Sturgis, SD, to be near her parents. She was given a teaching contract to teach 3 rd grade in the Sturgis Public School system. This was a position she kept for six years.
In 1963, Honour May nearly lost her life in a car accident in Rapid City while riding with her dear friends, the Watsons, her son Rick, and a visiting evangelist. Honour May sustained a broken neck and a number of broken vertebrae. The next summer Honour May and the boys lived in Faith, SD, where Honour May was a receptionist at the Faith Hospital to help supplement her income. It was here that Dr. Fred Martin introduced Honour May to a single rancher named Wendell Weichert. In 1965 Wendell and Honour were united in marriage and made their home in Sturgis.
The family moved to Rapid City, SD in 1967, ending Wendell's 60-mile commute to work every day. Honour signed a teaching contract with the Rapid City Public School system. She taught two years at Horace Mann Elementary School, and then transferred to Meadowbrook Elementary School, where she taught 3 rd grade until she took early retirement in 1989.
Wendell and Honour moved to Westhills Village in 1997 where they resided up to the present.
Honour loved to teach and was a dedicated teacher. It was not unusual for an adult that she didn't recognize to come up to her, introduce themselves, and tell her that she was their favorite teacher.
At an early age, Honour May gave her heart and life to Jesus Christ. Everything in her life: marriage, family, friends, profession, etc., had Christ as the center. She was very active in her church, serving as choir director, choir member, church pianist, church organist, Sunday school teacher, and children's church director.
Honour was preceded in death by: her loving parents, Ralph Mason Kelly and Honour May (McCune) Kelly; seven siblings: Ralph Mason Kelly Jr., Alice Carroll (Hysom) Veren, Mary Ellen Kelly, Charles McCune Kelly, David Martin Kelly, Naomi Ruth Kelly, and John Wesley Kelly; her husband, Harold Griffin, and her son, Rick Griffin.
Left to celebrate her home-going to heaven and mourn the loss of her loving presence here are: her dedicated husband of 50 years, Wendell Weichert of Rapid City; her son, Rod Griffin and wife Karen of Billings, MT; and a daughter-in-law, Lorna Griffin of Millville, PA; 4 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
"The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him." Psalm 34: 7-8.
A celebration of Honour's life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 10:30 am, at First Wesleyan Church, 202 East St. Francis Street, Rapid City, SD. The Reverend Steve Selfridge will officiate.
Interment will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
