Dr. Hubert H Theissen, age 99 died at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital following a brief illness on Sunday, March 26, 2023.
Visitation will be from 5:30pm-6:30pm Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Christian Wake service will be beginning at 6:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am on Friday March 31 at the church with Rev. Matt Fallgren as celebrant. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
He was born in New Ulm, MN to Hubert and Mathilda (Seifert) Theissen, was the ninth of ten children and attended both grade and High School there. His pre-medical education was at St. John's University Collegeville MN and completed his medical education at Marquette University, WI graduating there July 1947. After receiving his M.D. degree his internship was completed at St. Mary's Hospital Minneapolis MN.
Post-graduate studies began at U Of MN in Obstetrics and Gynecology. These were interrupted by a stint in the United States Army at which time he was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fort Monroe, VA. He then returned to complete his specialized training in July 1955. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was also recertified in l979.
He began his medical practice in May 1955 at the Rapid City Medical Center and with Richard Kovarik began the Women's Clinic in 1968, and remained in active practice till retirement in l991. He was on the active medical staff of Rapid City Regional Hospital, St. Johns and Bennet-Clarkson Hospital and was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at these hospitals. He was a Clinical Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the South Dakota School of Medicine and published several medical articles in local, state and national medical journals.
He is survived by his daughter Catherine and four sons Gregory, George, Mark (Melanie) all who live in Rapid City, and David (Denise) who live in Fort Collins, CO.
His wife of 65 years, "Army" (Armoryl) preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the Western South Dakota Catholic Foundation and Westhills Village Foundation.
