Hugh Martin, age 71,of Rapid City, passed away on Jan.10,2014 at the hospital in Rochester,Mn from a lung infection and complications. He was born in Faith, S.D., the ninth child of eleven, to Erskin and Dolly (Riley) Martin. Later he moved to Rapid City and then to Hermosa, where he met and later married, Sandi Gorsuch, his wife of 50 years on Feb 14, 1964. He worked construction jobs, feed mills, for the railroad in Belle Fourche, and oil rigs in Baker, MT, before moving to Minneapolis. During this time, he renewed his love of God that weaved through his life to the end. He worked in foundries, Bros. Manufacturing, and as a taxi driver. He and his wife were blessed to begin taking part in loving and raising eight of his nieces and nephews who remained a wonderful part of his life. In 1969, they all moved to Bemidji, MN to pastor a small church. While there he was critically injured while doing another thing he loved, riding horseback. He made his way back to South Dakota, and moved to Denver and Oregon while painting houses, among other jobs. He was always looking for a challenge, and while back home again in Rapid City, he leased and rebuilt a small motel, rebuilt mobile homes, purchased a trailer court and started a sanitation company. He drove a semi over the road, sometimes with his friend (and brother in law) John Gorsuch and sometimes with his son Matthew and various other children and family. In mid 2000, he purchased a metal crusher and loader and started a small car crushing business where he was working until the time of his death. He weaved his love of God, family, horses (all animals) through his life, and was at his best when he was figuring out how to make challenges an adventure. He had a contagious laugh, generous with his finances and time, and loved old westerns. Once on the road, he listened to a bible tape and thought he discovered that there was an "elephant man." He later had a good laugh at himself and with his daughters when he looked it up and found out that it was an "eloquent man." He loved and was loved by his parents, three brothers, Joel, Alvin, and Freddie, two sisters, Josephine and Freda Judd as well as his late father and mother in law, Lloyd and Betty Gorsuch; Survivors include his wife Sandi Martin, Rapid City; daughters, Gina McKay, Simpson, AZ and Naomi Leigh (Bob) Brown, Kona, HI; a son, Matthew "Buffy" (Ronda) Martin, Rapid City; special grandsons Nathan (Stevie Jo) Martin and Casey (Hope) Turner along with McKaylie Grace, Brennon Taylor and Calvin Robert Makanaloni Brown; three precious great-grandchildren, Savanna Jade and Madyson Josie Martin and Micah Stephen Turner; our special kids, Colleen, Billy, Robert and Bitzy Wills, Joel, Donnie, Heidi Jo and Jamie Jon Martin.
