IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Inez A.
Evens
April 4, 1922 – October 7, 2016
Inez Evens, 94, passed away Friday, October 7, 2016 at Bella Vista Nursing Home in Rapid City.
Inez was born April 4,1922 in Reliance, SD, to Hugo and Emma (Schindler) Zastrow. Her family farmed in Reliance until 1935, when they moved to Trojan, SD. Inez attended Lead High School and went to work as a clerk at Ben Franklin store in Deadwood.
She married Alfred Evens in May of 1947 and they had 5 children. Alfred's work in the mines took their family from Deadwood, SD to Butte, MT and Grants, NM. Alfred and Inez then moved to California in 1966 and Alfred died shortly after. Inez found work with the school district, where she worked for many years as a baker. She and her daughter, Pamela, moved to Rapid City in 1981, where she worked for Rapid City Regional Hospital until her retirement. Inez and Pamela remained together for many years.
Inez was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City where she attended mass and made frequent visits to light a candle and pray the rosary. She had a great, faithful devotion to the Eucharist and was found at daily mass in many of the parishes in Rapid City. If anyone in the family struggled with any difficulty, they could
always count on Inez to light a candle for them.
She thoroughly enjoyed visits with all her family members and car rides to just about anywhere one could stop and get lunch. She remained very close to her siblings while they were alive and made frequent trips to Deadwood and Sturgis to meet them. It brought tremendous joy to Inez when she was teased by her family, and she would willingly dish it back.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Evens, parents, Hugo and Emma Zastrow, brothers, Francis, Gilbert, and a sister, Julie Drake.
She is survived by one brother, Arnold, two sons, Jerry (Carol), Leon (Ellen), and three daughters. Sheila (Robert) Achbach, Nancy (Doug) Jennings, and Pamela, 15 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
