Obituary

Inez Lenore Hofer Shaver, 91 of Rapid City died on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Fountain Springs Health Care Facility. Inez Lenore Hofer was born November 24, 1918 in Vermillion, SD, the daughter of Joshua David and Zora Alameda (Sutherland) Hofer. Following graduation from high school in New Underwood, SD. Inez earned an RN degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, where she also studied pharmacy. In 1943 she married J. Milton P. Shaver. She was a nurse at St. John's Hospital and served for many years as a nurse at Paha Sapa Girl Scout Camp. Inez was active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was head of the bazaar, marathon bridge and participated in the women's circle. She was active in many civic organizations including Girl Scouts, PTA, Wahoo, and the Mt. Rushmore Society. Inez, along with her husband Milt, loved the Rapid City community and believed in building relationships and supporting community through sharing time, talents and financial resources to support many civic organizations. In her leisure time, Inez enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, sewing, knitting, crafts and playing cards. She loved people around her and enjoyed entertaining. She found picture puzzles a source for gathering family and friends in conversation. Survivors include her 3 daughters, Nancy Haley (Thomas Johnson), of St. Paul, MN; Marcia Houk (Garry Neiderworder), of Rapid City and Peggy Nielsen and her husband Scott, of Rapid City; 5 grandchildren, Josh, John, Joanna, Stephanie and Amanda; 3 great-grandchildren, Jillian, Asha, and Keira and 2 sisters, Phyllis Atwater, Rapid City and Ferne Payne, Cheyenne, WY. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Milton P. Shaver in 1992; her sisters Katherina and Geraldine and her parents. Visitation will be from 3 until 6 p.m. on Friday at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 12, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1200 Clark Street in Rapid City, with the Rev. Dr. Ted Huffman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Inez Shaver's memory to Dahl Arts Center, Hospice of the Hills, Children's Home Society or First Congregational United Church of Christ.
