Obituary

Irene Marian Doyle, 102, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at a health care residence in Rapid City. Irene Chordas was born on June 28, 1913 in Pocahontas, Il. to Hungarian parents. She was a talented individual who provided entertainment for all ages through her accordion and piano music. She finished high school and attended Washington University Art School. Irene was an upstanding member of her community and taught her immigrant relatives the English language and assisted them in preparing for citizenship. Irene married Robert Doyle on July 4th, 1942 a mere days before he shipped off to boot camp before fighting in the Pacific during the Second World War. During Robert's time at war, Irene raised two of their three children, Robert & Patricia. Marie was born three years later. Irene never learned to drive, instead walked or took public transportation everywhere. Her back yard was filled with Sunflower blooms, a vegetable garden, and many fruit bearing vines, trees and bushes. Her green thumb, delicious canned jellies, homemade wine, and cherry pies were a treat for her neighbors and friends. Her love of entering contest was a joyful surprise when a loved one opened a letter or package to reveal "You've Won!" Irene enjoyed life to the fullest! As a child, she took a horse drawn carriage ride across the frozen Mississippi River near St. Louis. For most of her career, she sold chocolate and other confections (and perhaps tasted just as many) for more than 40 years without gaining even one ounce of weight. In her 70's she tubed down Rapid Creek and took many road trips with family members throughout the years. She incorporated the lessons of eating the right foods with her homemade wine and followed the exercises of Jack Lalane in her daily life for more than 60 years. For the last 17 years she has been cared for by a much taller version of herself, her daughter and our very own Rapid City health care leader, Patricia McDowell. For the past 6 years, Irene was loved and cared for by Jolene and Chris Hinckley and their children: James, Ty & Kelsey. Irene is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert, grandson Kevin, granddaughter, Angel, and two great-grandchildren. Irene is survived and remembered by her younger brother Steve, California, son Robert (Susan) Doyle, Hilton Head, S.C., daughters Patricia (Richard) McDowell, Rapid City, S.D., and Marie (Gary) Rust, Las Vegas, N.V., 12 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. There will be a Rosary at 9:00 am Tuesday, October 6 at St. Therese-The Little Flower Catholic Church, 532 Adams Street and a Memorial Mass at 10:00 am on Tuesday at the church with Rev. Bill Zandri officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Calvary Cemetery at St. Louis, Missouri where her husband Robert is buried.
