Rapid City Irene Esther Haugan, 80, Rapid City, died Friday, December 25, 2009 at her home after a battle with cancer. Irene Esther Behm was born December 11, 1929 at Niagara, North Dakota to William Sr. and Alma [Schmidt] Behm. Irene was baptized on January 5, 1930. She attended school and graduated from high school at Michigan, North Dakota. After high school she attended Mayville Teachers College. She married Donald Haugan on May 13, 1960 at Grand Forks, North Dakota. They moved to Rapid City in 1965. She worked for Maverik Country Store and Common Cents for 27 years and retired in 2007. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Survivors include her husband: Donald Haugan of Rapid City; one daughter: Melissa Haugan of Rapid City; one son: Michael [Sandy] Haugan of Keller, TX; and one grandson: Casey Haugan of Keller, TX; two brothers: William Behm and Robert Behm of Grand Forks, ND; eight sisters: Elaine Gemmill of Edinburg, ND, Eleanore Broton of West Fargo, ND, Eunice Novick of Hasting, MN, Lorraine Abbot of Elk River, MN, Delores Krogen of San Jose, CA, Verdell Smith of Gray Eagle, CA, Ione Jacobson of Vancouver, WA, and Marie Bye of East Grand Forks, ND; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter: Melinda, a twin of Melissa, who died shortly after birth; four brothers: Ervin, Donald, Vernon, and Virgil; and one sisters: Jeanette Suidyla. Services are scheduled for 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1630 Rushmore Street, with Rev. Josh Jones officiating and assisted by Rev. Christopher Lockie, from Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be 1:30 PM Monday, January 4 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
