Obituary

RAPID CITY- Isabelle Josephine Traversie Montreal passed from this world on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at home at the age of 102. She was under hospice care. Special thanks to Gary Montreal, Jr. and Kelsey Montreal for their dedicated assistance during this emotional time.

Isabelle was born May 9, 1914 in Velva, ND to Whitley and Felecia Traversie. She married Martin J. Montreal on August 7, 1932, at the Church of St. Teresa in Whitehorse, SD.

Isabelle spent her early years in Velva, ND and was raised in Whitehorse. She attended school at Cheyenne River Boarding School, Stephan Indian School, and St. Joseph Indian School. She was an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a proud ancestor of Chief War Eagle.

She started work in 1956 for the Cheyenne Agency School and retired in 1978 from the Cheyenne- Eagle Butte School. Following her retirement, she resided in Rapid City until her passing. Isabelle was an avid reader, loved to bead, do crossword puzzles and watch her favorite TV shows.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters: Thelma, Sylvia, Sybil, Katherine, and Rosalee; brothers: William and High Clark; daughter, Joan; and sons, Nino and Terry.

She is survived by her son, Gary Montreal, Sr. and daughter, Rosalee F. Zephier and well as special grandsons: Marlin Montreal and Martin W. Montreal; numerous grandchildren, friends and relatives.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2017 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
