Obituary

Jack Dean Mattis was born August 25, 1937 in Wagner, SD, to Jack and Bessie Mattis and went to heaven October 7, 2019.  He became a child of God through the washing of Holy Baptism on November 28, 1937 and later publicly confessed his faith before the Lord on March 18, 1951 at his confirmation into the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.  At the time of his death, he was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Rapid City.  He attended school in Wagner and graduated from Wagner High School in 1955.  Following graduation he moved to Rapid City and worked for Birdsall Sand and Gravel, Private Homes and Rand Construction.  In 1957 he went to Fort Leonard Wood, MO for 6 months to train with the SD National Guard.  He was a member of the 109 th Engineering Group for 6 years.  After active service in MO, he continued to work for Stanley J. Johnsen Concrete Contractor, Inc. for 35 years.  After retirement from Stanley Johnsen, Jack managed Dee Jay Camper Center, with his brother-in-law Ron Uecker.  After Dee Jay's, he worked for National Alamo at the Rapid City Regional Airport, until his retirement at age 80.

On September 26, 1959 he married the love of his life, Arlene L. Uecker of Wagner and spent 60 wonderful years together.  The Lord blessed this marriage with three children.  Jack is survived by his wife Arlene; his daughters, Kimberly (Greg) Sperte, of Federal Way, WA and Lisa (Mike) Wojnicki, of Fullerton, CA; son David Mattis of Tacoma, WA and grandchildren, Melissa (Tanner) Bell and Spencer (Miranda) Hicks.  He is also survived by sisters, Helen Beaman and Joan Van Asperen and brothers, Gary Mattis, Gordon Mattis and Dick Buus.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Kleta Rehwaldt, and brothers-in-law, Donald Rehwaldt, Don Van Asperen, Victor Laue and James Beaman.

The Lord granted him a crown of life at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Services will be on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 910 Wood Ave., Rapid City, with the Rev. Luke Edwards officiating.
