IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jacqueline "Jackie"
Rae Livermont
February 10, 1933 – January 17, 2026
Jacqueline "Jackie" Rae Livermont passed away unexpectedly on January 17, 2026. She was born on February 10, 1933, in Rosebud, SD, the second of six children, to Gladys Martha (Redmond) Livermont and Joseph Erickson Livermont.
In 1940, Joe and Gladys purchased land in Wanblee on the Pine Ridge Reservation and started a cattle ranch. Jackie told many stories about growing up in the post-Depression era: going barefoot in the summer to save their shoes for winter, hauling water up from the creek, walking to school (yes, uphill BOTH ways!). Jackie loved school, starting early at age 4 and graduating from Interior High School in a senior class of 5 students.
In 1954, Jackie married Wallace "Wally" Cleveland and they moved to Jasper, MN. Soon after, they welcomed two daughters, Debra Sue and Lynne Ann. Wally was a union carpenter, so they went where the work was, living in various towns in South Dakota and Illinois. They divorced in 1973. Later, Jackie married James Evanger and they traveled for his job as a millwright. After that marriage ended, she remained happily divorced, always referring to her ex-husbands as Number 1 and Number 2. Her only grandchild, MacKenzie AKA the Golden Child, was born in 1986 and was sufficiently spoiled by Grandma.
As employment histories go, Jackie's was pretty interesting including waitressing, packing TNT at an ammunitions plant, and assembling arrows at the Wanblee Arrow Factory. At the age of 49, Jackie went back to school in Pine Ridge to become a Registered Nurse. She worked at Sioux San (now Oyate) until she retired and met some of her best friends there. Together they travelled to Hawaii, the Caribbean, South Beach, FL, and Las Vegas. Oh, the stories they told about their adventures…perhaps the girls needed a chaperone during some of their craziest exploits!?
Travelling with her family was also a frequent occurrence: Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Colorado, Ireland, plus several cruises and annual trips to Playa del Carmen. When at home, she could often be found baking something to share with friends or playing golf.
Jackie was strong, feisty, and stubborn. Our lives will be forever changed and infinitely more boring without her.
The service to celebrate her life will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City on Friday January 23, 2026 at 12pm with a viewing starting at 11am. In honor of Jackie's love of vibrant colors—especially red and coral—guests are invited to wear something bright. Her family will lay her to rest in Martin the following day.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Animal Assistance League, PO Box 776298, Steamboat Springs, CO 80477.
Arrangements with Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
