Obituary

Jake Joseph Lien, age 41, of Rapid City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

Jake was a vibrant part of the Rapid City community and a beloved member of Black Hills Workshop, where he helped to establish Jake's Place, an accessible housing project that continues to serve as a model of inclusion and independence. In his early years, Jake was also part of a pioneering effort to integrate children with disabilities into mainstream education. His cheerful nature and success in school helped pave the way for greater acceptance and normalization of inclusive classrooms, opening doors for many who came after him.

Jake lived his life with a joyful spirit and an open heart. He made friends wherever he went. Though words were not his main form of communication, aside from his reminders of "I love you" and "I go", Jake expressed himself fully through his smile, laughter, and presence. He gave back more than he was ever given, and everyone who met him carried away a piece of his light. Jake also had a deep and abiding love for music, which was a constant source of happiness throughout his life. Jake's life was a testament to joy, resilience, and unconditional love and his memory will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his parents, Rich and Suzy Gabrielson; his sister, Sami Lien (Bradley, Hank, and Max Weaver); and his brothers, Brandon Gabrielson (Dani, Avery, and Ella) and Doron Griss (Sandra and Oliver). He is also remembered by his extended family, countless friends, and the dedicated medical professionals who gave their all to ensure Jake lived the best quality of life possible.
