NEW UNDERWOOD- James (Jim) Harrison Whitman, 83, passed away peacefully at home on October 2, 2014, surrounded by his children and grandchildren in New Underwood, SD. Jim was born on May 2, 1931 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Kapuskasing and the New London, Wisconsin, area. He served in the Air Force after high school and then entered the building profession; building churches and other community buildings around the Midwest. He met his wife Carol (Jean) Brachvogel while building the church in her hometown of Redfield, South Dakota. Jim and Jean were married 58 years. Jim moved from construction to trucking later in his career and retired from driving for Watertown Box in 2003. He and Jean moved to New Underwood, SD in 2004 to be near their youngest daughter, Becky & husband & their grandchildren. Jim is survived by Jean, his four children Jeff (Linda) Whitman, Kemp, TX; Terri Nelson, St. Paul, MN; Douglas (Ben) Whitman, New York, NY; and Becky (Les) Heinrich, Caputa, SD; and four grandchildren: Drew (Nichole), Laura, Catherine and Christian; brother, Earl (Betty), sisters Betty, Helen and Sandra (Jim) and many loving nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. No services are planned at this time.
