RAPID CITY – James A. Huss, 82, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at Clarkson Health Care in Rapid City.
Jim was born on August 6, 1941, to Irvin W. Huss and Bernice (Ostreim) Huss in Bismarck, North Dakota. After high school, Jim served as a Photographers Mate in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1962. On November 27, 1964, he married Connie Rae (Nelson) Huss in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jim attended Valley City State College where he earned his bachelor's degree and later, the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee where he obtained a master's degree. For over 30 years, Jim taught science at Lance Junior High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. While teaching at Lance, he also volunteered to coach track and field and supervise students in various extra-curricular activities such as photography and weightlifting.
In his free time, Jim enjoyed woodcarving. Some of his waterfowl carvings were featured in a publication, showcasing his talent. He also enjoyed shooting Trap and was a member of the Rapid City Trap Club. While living in Wisconsin, Jim enjoyed sailboat racing, recreational league softball and basketball, photography and mentoring his family and students.
Jim is survived by his wife, Connie Huss of Rapid City, son, Greg Huss (Barb) of Kenosha, WI, son, Gary Huss (Becky) of Montgomery, TX, seven grandchildren: Kyle (Emily), Tyler, Hannah, Cameron, Oscar, Dwight, and George, as well as his great-grandchild Henry. Jim is also survived by his brother Charles (Geri), and sisters Marilyn (Marsh) and Sally (Terry), as well as Connie's brother and sisters: Richard (Sally), Renee, and Gayle (Paul). Jim was very appreciative of all of the friends that have supported him throughout his life, and those that continue to support Connie. It is a remarkable group of people, for whom his family will always be thankful.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Pastor David Piper officiating.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to: The Alzheimer's Association, The American Cancer Society, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
