RAPID CITY- Jim Lockhart went from being a kid who grew up in Dark Canyon west of Rapid City to building his own log home with his father-in-law and then raising eight children there. The son of a one-time Pennington County Sheriff and a country school teacher, Jim served in the U.S. Navy manning submarines in the WWII Pacific Ocean theatre. After returning from U.S. military service, he met Teena Tomsik while riding horseback along Rapid Creek. The two married and Jim provided for his family with 40 years of duty as a locomotive engineer for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. The Lockhart children tribute their father and mother with ways they received love and strength, including one of Jim's favorite sayings to console, "It sure will feel good when it stops hurting." Born March 3, 1926, and died November 2, 2013, Jim Lockhart was 87 years old. He never let the facts stand in the way of a good story. Grandson Jake says, "He was the best grandpa a kid could ask for." Grandson Caine shares, "Grandpa made all of his grandchildren feel special." Daughter Stasia says, "He was the best riding partner I'll ever have." They rode horses on the desert trails of New Mexico over many years and miles. Some of the things he enjoyed most include horses and fishing. There never was a horse he could not ride. Jim celebrated 100 years of South Dakota statehood by participating in the Centennial Wagon Train. Additionally, he was honored to participate in the August 2009 "Honor Flight" to the WWII memorial in Washington, DC. Jim was also friend to the Lakota and honored by Lakota families. Jim's children insist he was a cheerleader for adventure who let them push past their own boundaries whether it was by draping a six foot bull snake around their shoulders or letting them study for a summer abroadJim gave his children trust and love. Son Kevin shares, "Dad had a real vision for his Eternal Life and he trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Friend to lead him to Glory!" Twenty years after the loss of his first wife Teena, Jim married Elizabeth Kiessling. The couple shared 14 years of marriage and many great times with their children. With Elizabeth, Jim experienced a happy, active and community-steeped life at West Hills Retirement Village. Jim Lockhart is preceded in death by his father Frank Lockhart, his mother, Mary Lockhart, his sister, Francis Lockhart, his brother William Lockhart, his first wife Teena Lockhart, his son Jim Lockhart, Jr. and grandson Jason Long Fox. Jim is survived by his second wife Elizabeth Lockhart, his children, Sandy White Shield, Sue Lockhart, Paula and Bruce Long Fox, Gemma Lockhart, Kevin and Karen Lockhart, Stasia and Jim Spurrier, Justin Lockhart, and Tauna Lockhart; and grandchildren Tamera, Tara, Kasey, Kateri, Kyra, Jace, Trevor, Chalin, Sean, Cheyenne, Aaron, Tina, Toni, Caine, Maranda, Tonia, Justin, Jake, Joel, Nathan, Caitlin and Theresa and about 15 great grandchildren. Jim will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 9:00AM at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Rapid City, South Dakota. Friends are welcome. Military Honors will be provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. A memorial has been established to Wounded Warriors.
