Obituary

James "Jim" L. Giese, 69, of Rapid City passed away Monday 20 October 2025.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Friday, November 7th at the Rimrock Church, 12200 West highway 44, Rapid City, SD  57702 with Pastor Ben Green officiating.  A private interment will take place at a later date.

James Lee "Jim" Giese was born February 23, 1956 to Dean and "Betty" Elizabeth (Bertha) Giese in Hoven, SD. Jim graduated from Hoven High School where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He attended college at Northern State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. After college, he worked in the oil fields, rarely missing the opportunity to return to the farm for spring planting and the fall harvest. Jim was appreciative of his family heritage and took pride in being a fourth generation South Dakotan. He later worked as a business associate and regional sales representative of Hebron Brick Company.

On February 14, 1997, he married Pamela "Pam" Schweigert in Rapid City, where their son Layne was born. Jim's occupation required him to be on the road a fair bit of the time, and on occasion Pam and Layne would accompany him on business trips/adventures. In the summer when Layne was older, he would go with his dad on the road for a few weeks at a time, fishing, hiking, or just having fun.

Throughout the years, Jim owned many horses, ranging from cutting horses, green to well broke saddle horses, pack horses, and even race horses. Another great pleasure for Jim was guns and shooting. He enjoyed collecting and every gun had a story, but shooting was much more fun. Then there was hunting. He took moose in Alaska, hunted mule deer in Mexico, and shot elk at several locations in between. He especially loved packing into the mountains on horseback. Elk camp was probably his favorite place in all of the great outdoors. These passions brought him great satisfaction and many cherished friendships over the years.

Jim is survived by his son Layne of Tucson AZ; two brothers, Bob (Marcia) of West Point, UT and Tim (Colette); nieces Amanda and Sarah, all of Sioux Falls, SD, as well as many friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Pam.

Jim will be remembered for his soft spoken demeaner, his kind heart, and his deep loyalty to family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
