James "Whitey"
Michael Broderick

James Michael Broderick (Whitey), age 71, died peacefully in the morning of May 23 rd , 2019 with family all around him. James (Whitey) was born in Cohoes, NY on June 30, 1947 to the loving parents of James and Mary Broderick. James is second of three siblings, who all grew up in Cohoes, NY. In October of 1966, James joined the United Air Force. In 1968, after a tour in Vietnam, James was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, where he met his loving wife, Carol Broderick.
James and Carol were married on November 7 th , 1970. The couple then were stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. James honorably left the military as a Staff Sargent E-5 electrician in February of 1974. They spent 13 years in Anchorage but moved back to Rapid City after having their first child, Sara, in 1983. They had their second child, Paul in 1985.
James, or Whitey as most knew him by, worked at various restaurants and hotels as a chef throughout the Black Hills. "Whitey" was known for his "World Famous" steak sandwich, the Faz-tip pastry bags, the Reel Putter, and all his numerous ideas for inventions including the pretzel farm.
James was passionate about helping new entrepreneurs and their business adventures which lead him to be an adviser for Counselors to America's Small Business [SCORE], chapter 157. James was very passionate about his relationships with family and friends and had the heart to help others with no questions asked. He would give people meals, hire them for work, or just listen to their life stories. If you ever had the pleasure to know "Whitey", he was full of life, hot tempered, one of a kind husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend.
James is preceded in death by his father James Broderick; mother Mary Broderick; and brother Rich Broderick.
Survivors include his wife Carol Broderick; daughter Sara (Samuel) Cordes; son Paul (April) Broderick; sister Maryanne (Joseph) Ringler; grandchildren: Skyler, Jack, Kadyn, Aidan, Kenadie, Aurora, and Zane; Aunt Helen Rinchik; niece Heather (Cooper) Nelson; and nephew Joseph Ringler.
In lieu of flowers, donations may me made to the Rushmore VFW Post #1273 Honor Guard, Cornerstone Rescue Mission, or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 am Friday, May 31, 2019 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the funeral service starting at 9:30 am.
Burial will take place at 11:30 am at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post #1273 and Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
