Obituary

RAPID CITY — James "Jim" Nolan, age 85, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away on May 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on November 9, 1939, in Plankinton, South Dakota, Jim was the son of Edward and Charlotte Nolan. He married Barbara "Bobbie" on June 25, 1966, in Lead, South Dakota, and together they built a wonderful life in Rapid City, where they raised their two children.

Jim was a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend, and a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie; their two children: Mike (Jennifer) of Alamo, California, and their children, Erika and Derek; and Steve (Trisha) of Rapid City and their children Josh (Lindsey) and children Taylin, Carson, Austyn, and Broden; Kylee (Kramer) and children Londyn, Harlow, and Palmer; Tyler "T.J.", and Ryan.

Jim loved being an educator and coach at West Junior High/Middle School for over 35 years. He cherished the relationships he formed with students, teachers, staff members, and community members throughout the years. Jim coached football at West and enjoyed coaching his children in various sports while they were growing up in Rapid City. Jim was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved nothing more than spending time with family. He was known for his friendly smile, good nature and kindness, sense of humor, faith, and genuine interest in others.

In retirement, Jim treasured his role as grandfather and great-grandfather, creating lasting memories through fishing trips, camping adventures, and countless hours cheering from the sidelines at sporting events. He valued his time with family and friends. Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 am, Thursday, May 22, at Blessed Sacrament Church, followed by a lunch. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Canyon Lake Little League to honor Jim's legacy.
