Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of James H. Thrall, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend who left this earth peacefully on November 12th, 2024, at the age of 83.  Jim was born in Huron, South Dakota, on March 6th 1941 and spent his life dedicated to his family and his passion for environmental stewardship.

Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Thrall; his children Beth (Steve), Fernando, Debbie, and Michael; his beloved grandchildren, Shonte, Desean, Megan, and Matthew; and his new great-granddaughter, Josephine.  He was a devoted family man and whose positive influence touched the lives of all who knew him.

Jim graduated from Huron High School in 1959, Jim went on to get his bachelor's and master's degrees from Saint Mary's College, finishing his education with a doctorate from Illinois State University in 1972.  He and Anne spent two years serving in the Peace Corps in Uganda and Columbia before moving to Evanston, Illinois. There, he enjoyed a successful career in Environmental Engineering,  which  eventually led  him to Anchorage, Alaska, where he lived for the rest of his career.  He was known for his passion for the work, his extensive knowledge, and the respect he garnered in his field.  Upon retiring he enjoyed travel, quality time with family, and his love of reading.

Jim traveled the world, whether during his Peace Corps service, the numerous projects in countries such as New Guinea, El Salvador, and Sierra Leone.  Together with Anne, he traveled to many places including Australia, Tanzania, Europe, and their beloved Costa Rica, enriching their lives with so many unforgettable experiences.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 16th at 10:30 am at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Citizens' Climate Lobby in Jim's honor. https://citizensclimatelobby.org/donate/

He will be missed, yet his memory and the positive impact he made will live on in the hearts of all of those who loved him.
