Obituary

RAPID CITY | Jane Ann DeSmet, 63, died on Thursday, April 16, 2015, after a lengthy illness from lung cancer. Jane was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1952, to Charles and Ardis Brunick in Vermillion, SD. She was privileged to grow up on a farm north of Vermillion with her sisters Cheryl and Judy. Jane attended Spirit Mound School #15- a one room rural school. Vermillion High School and graduated with honors from the University of South Dakota. It was at the University where she met the love of her life, Dennis DeSmet. They were married in 1974 and made Rapid City their home. Some of her most treasured years were those spent as a stay at home mom raising their son Craig and daughter Anna. Jane taught in the Rapid City Public Schools for 27 years. She also taught Sunday school classes at her church. She made a difference in the lives of many children and they enriched her life. She made a miraculous recovery from pancreatic cancer in 2006. Recently, precious years were spent being a grandma to Jakob, Caleb, Cayden, and Chloe. She was extremely delighted and honored to be their grandma. The abounding kindnesses and prayers from family, friends, acquaintances, and caregivers were certainly a great blessing to Jane and her family. Survivors include her husband, Dennis DeSmet, Rapid City; son, Craig (Sarah) DeSmet, Valparaiso, IN; daughter, Anna DeSmet, Rapid City; two sisters: Judy (Doug) Gjesdal, Harrisburg, SD; Cheryl Lundeen, Sioux Falls and four grandchildren: Jakob, Caleb, Cayden and Chloe DeSmet.
