Obituary

Rapid City - Janean Elaine Theberge, 60, Rapid City, left this life Thursday evening, October 11, 2012. Jan was born September 15, 1952, to Maxine (Oney) and Donald Williamson. Her early years were spent in Rapid City where she attended Bergquist Elementary and West Junior High Schools. Family members recall the spunky young girl who wrecked her Grandpa Oney's beloved Cadillac while driving some relatives from Hot Springs to Rapid City. Thinking they were about to be hit by an oncoming car, Jan swerved the Cadillac off the road and it rolled several times in a field. When asked why she was driving, 12-year-old Jan answered, "I was the only one in the car who knew how. Uncle Norman taught me." Her uncle Norman was seven at the time. (Fortunately, no one in the car was hurt seriously.) Jan attended high school in Albuquerque, NM, and the family later moved to Sitka, Alaska, where Jan's eldest son, Donald Hallor, was born. Jan always loved her step-father, Guy Mills. Jan also attended college in California. She was an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Jan worked with the US Forest Service in Prescott, AZ, the National Park Service at Wind Cave, and on the Black Hills National Forest, Pactola District. She married Joe Theberge on October 22, 1988, and they made their home in the country along Rimrock Highway, southwest of Rapid City. Two children, Genevieve and Larry, were born to this union. Jan managed rental properties through their family business for many years. Jan loved gardening and canning with her aunt, Evie Oney. She especially loved her barn and animals. At various times, she had horses, donkeys, burros, dogs, cats, and peacocks. A few years ago on a trip to Mexico with her daughter, Genevieve, they came upon a tiny, emaciated stray puppy on the street which Genevieve could not bear to leave behind. Nina, the puppy Jan thought was a Chihuahua, grew into a sizeable mutt and became her favorite dog. Recently, Jan had been involved with training show horses. Jan began having trouble with her back in 2011 and was diagnosed with bone cancer last April. Less than a month ago, a huge crowd of what she fondly called her "wild and crazy friends" and family members gathered for a potluck at the Happy Tavern in Johnson Siding to celebrate Jan's 60th birthday. "She smiled til her face hurt," husband Joe recalled. "It was a great birthday party." Survivors include her husband, Joe Theberge; children, Don Hallor, Sioux Falls, and Genevieve and Larry Theberge, Rapid City; mother, Maxine Mills, Hill City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Melba Kendrick, Fremont, CA, and Larry and Lucy Williamson, Hill City; uncle, Norman (Myrna) Oney, Windsor Locks, CT; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd., Rapid City, at 1 pm., Wednesday, October 17, with Rev. Larry Salway officiating. Visitation will be from noon-1 pm preceding the funeral. Casketbearers are Don Hallor, Jeff Williamson, Larry Theberge, Larry Williamson, Gene Kendrick and Ron Oney. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery. A reception to greet the family will be held at the VFW following interment. A memorial has been established with the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
