RAPID CITY- Janet (Jan) King 80, of Black Hawk , SD passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by family on Thursday, February 12, 2015. She was born in Gettysburg, SD and moved to Rapid City after graduation. Jan was employed by the Rapid City Area Schools for the majority of her career enjoying all the challenges and opportunities that were presented to her. Jan loved to bowl and spent over 20 years coaching youth bowlers, retiring in 1989. Jan was involved the Rapid City Junior Bowling Association as a director and then served as President. She was a member of the RCWBA for 35 years and served on the Board of Director's for 19 years. In 2003, she was inducted in South Dakota Women's Bowling Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. On March 22, 2014, Jan received the Lifetime Service Award in appreciation for her 43 plus years and dedication to the Miss Rapid City Scholarship Program. Jan worked with literally hundreds of young ladies, encouraging them and giving them the opportunity to compete for Miss Rapid City and Miss South Dakota and serve their communities in that capacity. The organization created and presents the 'Jan King Community Service Scholarship Award', to the contestant in each division who has shown the most commitment to community service. Jan had an amazing spirit; she was on the side of her son's in law and her daughters. She would defend her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the end. She saw the good in everyone she would meet. She would sell everything she owned to help a friend. Jan lost a young son. She lost a husband. She lost many physical abilities towards the end of her life, but she never lost her dignity or her class. Her legacy will be revealed each time any of us who lived in her radiance choose understanding and acceptance in our dealings with others and knowing the greatest thing you'll ever learn, is to love and be loved in return.
