Obituary

RAPID CITY--Janet Walton Wright Curl, 94, died January 2nd, 2009, at her daughter's home in Rapid City. Janet Walton Wright was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 14th, 1914 to Reverend Abner King and Janet Isabelle Walton Wright. She moved to Louisville, Kentucky when she was five. Her father was a preacher at the Baptist Tabernacle Church in Louisville, Kentucky. She made many life long friends there. She would also speak of the many rides out into the countryside to visit and play with her cousins that included corncobfights in the barn and churning butter. She attended Bethel Women's College and received a degree in Social Work from the University of Louisville in 1935. She married Gilbert W. Curl on May 9th, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. They were in the Army for 22 years and then retired in Denver, Colorado in 1961. While in the army they had wonderful assignments and lived in exotic places such as Phnom Penh, Cambodia and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Janet loved all the friends they made and the experiences they were able to share with their children. Eighteen years ago she moved to Rapid City to be closer to her family. Janet was an outgoing woman who made many friends there through the Congregational Church, WestHills Village, and her sisters in PEO. She loved being with her family and extended family in Rapid City and she always enjoyed being part of the party. Jan also loved being Nana to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Lt. Col. Gilbert W. Curl, Sr. in 1998, and 2 brothers Leslie (Lolla) and James ( Mary) Wright. She was the beloved mother of Gilbert W. Curl, Jr. (Virginia) of Williamsburg, VA; Dr. Walton W. Curl (Karen) of Winston-Salem, NC; Catherine Calhoon (Stephen) of Rapid City; and beloved grandmother to Jackie Foster (Tom) and their two children Kate and Sarah, Columbia, SC; David Curl, Durham, NC; Douglas (Cori) Curl, Nashville, TN; Dr. Michael (Sarah) Curl of Lynchburg, VA; Shannon (Zac) Hester and their son William of Rapid City, SD; and Meghan Calhoon of Denver, CO. Janet was a gracious lady and warm hostess who was always ready for a game of cards or guests in her home. She had a natural curiosity and interest in local and world events. She leaves many happy memories of countless gatherings of family and friends. All that knew her will miss her. Visitation will be from 1 to 3pm on Monday, January 5th at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, with funeral services at 3pm on Monday with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. A reception following the service will be held at Westhills Village. Interment will be at 2pm, Saturday, January 10th, at the Resthaven Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Disabled Veterans of America and the Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City.
