Obituary

RAPID CITY- Janice Joy Johnson Spicer, 76, passed peacefully Friday, February 11, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Jan was born March 30, 1934 in Quinn, South Dakota to Ralph Cotton Johnson and Gladys Hildebrandt Johnson. She was baptized into the Methodist faith June 10, 1934. In her youth, Jan enjoyed roller skating, bike riding, tennis, and Y-Teen Basketball. She was a drum majorette, and in 1949 traveled to Spokane, WA with the Jobs Daughters drill team. Jan graduated from Rapid City High School in 1952. She received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from South Dakota State College in 1956. During her idyllic college years, she formed many life-long friendships and met her future husband, Robert A. Spicer. Bob and Jan were married June 9, 1957 (divorced 1980). Early married life found the young couple living in Pierre, Minneapolis (birth of Steve, 1960), Rapid City (birth of Lance, 1962), Aberdeen (joining Shaklee), and then returning to Rapid City. Jan taught elementary and high school physical education. She was instrumental in the creation of competitive girls high school athletics in Rapid City. She also served on the advisory board for the South Dakota High School Activities Association. She coached girls gymnastics, track, and tennis; her girls called her Mom. In 1976, Jan left her teaching and coaching career to focus on her Shaklee business (JSL Enterprises). In her nearly 50 years with Shaklee, she made countless friends throughout the country. After the death of her father in 1993, Jan recommitted herself to the Methodist Faith- her life was never the same. With dear friends and pastors, she began a spiritual journey that lasted the rest of her life. Survivors include two sons: Steve (Jane) Spicer, Phoenix, AZ and her two grandchildren, Jack and Sarah Spicer; Lance (Angela Freeman) Spicer, Seattle, WA; a brother, Dennis (Sharon) Johnson, Rapid City; and numerous cousins and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Physicians and Nurses of Rapid City Regional Hospital for their care and support. Thank You! Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 18, 2011 at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Grinager officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to Canyon Lake United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
