Obituary

Rapid City - Jay Brink, 80, Rapid City, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Westhills Village Health Care Center in Rapid City. Jay was born on September 8, 1934 in Corsica, SD to Frank and Altha Brink. He graduated from Corsica High School and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in electrical engineering in 1956. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant from 1956 to 1958 in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He remained in the reserves until 1962. Jay married his high school sweetheart, Betty Menning on August 20, 1954. She was the love of his life. They were married in 60 years. They raised 3 daughters, Deb Lanning, Cindy Shagla, and Stacey Brown. They lived in Rapid City, New Jersey, California and numerous jobsites across the country. When he retired they spent their winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Jay loved being with his family, especially his 6 grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, and fishing. After leaving the US Army, he joined his father at the family business, Brink Electric Construction Company. He was very passionate about work. Eventually his younger brothers joined him. He retired in 1995, and was brought out of retirement in 2005 when the company was purchased back. He had served as Alumni President for the School of Mines, was an Elder of First Presbyterian Church, previously on Westhills Village Board and First Federal Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife: Betty Brink of Rapid City; his mother: Altha Brink of Rapid City; three daughters: Deb (Tom) Lanning of Salt Lake City, UT, Cindy (Jerry) Shagla of Hot Springs, SD, and Stacey (Pat) Brown of Rapid City; six grandchildren: TJ (Ashley) Lanning, Alex (Jessie) Lanning, Christopher (Lindsey) Shagla, Gabe Shagla, Justin Brown, and Alana Brown; three brothers: Doug (Ginger) Brink, Lyle Brink, and Randy (Monica) Brink all of Rapid City; one sister: Kay (Rod) Everson of Black Hawk; sister-in-law: Luetta Brink of Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jay was preceded in death by his father: Frank Brink, brother: Duane Brink, sister-in-laws: Luella Zimmerman and Gayla Brink, and in-laws: Herman and Minnie Menning. Visitation will be 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, February 25 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard. Funeral service will be 10:00 am Thursday, February 26 at First Presbyterian Church, 710 Kansas City Street, with Rev. Jeff Kintner and Rev. Dr. Diane Janssen-Hemmen officiating. Burial will be held at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Rapid City with full military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post #1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Memorials may be directed to SDSM&T Foundation or Westhills Village Foundation.
