Obituary

Dr. Jay Walt Segrist (John Walt Segrist, Jr.) passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at the age of 47. He is survived by his three sons, D'Kota, Dawson, and Dayler; wife, Coralett Winget Segrist; mother Sharron Catherine Carr Segrist; and brothers Jeremy and Jedd. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. John Walt Segrist Sr. of Spearfish, SD; grandparents George and Janice Segrist of Clarinda, IA; and grandparents Bob and Maybelle Carr of Valentine, NE.

Jay was born on Aug. 31, 1970 in Valentine, NE. He grew up in Alliance, NE with a love for sports and academics. After earning All-State honors in basketball in high school, Jay went on to play college tennis at the University of Nebraska, earning Academic All Big Eight Conference Honors. He graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors and a variety of other academic awards, and then attended the College of Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, graduating in 1998. Jay and his wife Coralett Winget Segrist moved to Kimball, NE with their young son D'Kota. After a few years there, they later moved to Sheridan WY where Dawson was born, finally settling in Rapid City, S.D., where Jay started his own practice, Advanced Family Dental. Jay and Coralett built up the practice steadily over the years, having another son along the way, Dayler. Jay was very thankful for his co-workers and patients that he grew to know.

Jay loved his family and community. His favorite pastime was playing golf, especially when his sons joined him from their home near Arrowhead Country Club. Over the years, he had many competitive rounds with his father and two brothers. He volunteered with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Junior Achievement of South Dakota, St. Francis Dental Clinic on the Rosebud Reservation, and other local charities. In his later years, Jay developed a strong interest in self-improvement. His faith in God had grown steadily over the years. He will be dearly missed by all of his loved ones.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, for those wishing to contribute, the family has asked that donations be given to the National Institute of Mental Health, Storybook Island, Rural America Initiatives, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Thursday, April 5, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2822 Canyon Lake Drive, in Rapid City, with visitation one hour prior. A reception will immediately follow the service.  Private interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
