Obituary

Rapid City - Jean Larson, 84, Rapid City, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospice of the Hills. Jean was born on September 14, 1926, in Bison, South Dakota, to Celia Mae (Fitzgerald) and Harris Reed Olien. She lived on the farm on the South Grand River in Perkins County. Jean stayed with her Grandma Etta Fitzgerald when she attended first grade in Strool, South Dakota. She attended Timber Draw Country School in Perkins County, which was a two mile walk, until the family moved to the Black Hills area in 1939. Jean graduated from New Underwood High School in 1945. In the summer of 1945, Jean attended Black Hills College and received a teaching certificate. She taught school at the Spring Creek Country School near Hermosa, South Dakota from 1945 to 1947. In 1947, Jean moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, and worked for the telephone company. She met the love of her life, E.L. Teet Larson, and they were married on January 18, 1947, in Broadus, Montana. Three children were born to this union: Gary, Jim, and Tom. Jean was a stay at home mom when the boys were younger and worked at Black Hills Federal Credit Union in 1980s. In her later years, she volunteered her time at the MADD Office and the Pennington County Sheriffs Office. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #1221. Jean enjoyed crafts, quilting, cribbage, snowmobiling, traveling to Branson, Missouri and the Southwest, dancing, camping, bowling, family reunions, and participating in the Senior Olympics, where she received many medals and awards for her sharp card playing abilities. She was also known for making the best donuts in the Black Hills. Jean was a loving mother, sister, grandma, aunt and friend. She liked everyone she met, and was loved by everyone for her exceptional kindness, forgiving manner, and her keen sense of humor. Survivors include sons, Gary(Susie)Larson Black Hawk, SD, Jim Larson Sheridan Lake, Tom(Chris)Larson Fargo, ND; ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; her brother, Bud(Joann)Olien, Rapid City; her sister, Joy(Orville) Dawkins Rapid City and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, E.L. Teet Larson, her sister, Lois, her parents, Celia and Harris Olien, and a special traveling companion of ten years, Bud Degen. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 602 Auburn Drive, with the Pastor Jon Mapa officiating. Visitation will be for one hour before services at the church. Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Minneluzahan Senior Citizens and Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills.
