Obituary

RAPID CITY- Jean A. McColley passed away on July 14, 2014, at Westhills Village Health Care in Rapid City, South Dakota. Jean was born August 19, 1928, in Kennebec, South Dakota, to Ross and Blanche Young, following her twin sister and life-long friend, Joyce, into this world. Jean attended school in Oacoma, SD, and graduated high school in Chamberlain, SD. In 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Don McColley in Chamberlain, SD. Don and Jean moved to Kansas City, KS where Don attended college. After graduating from Mortuary Science school, Don and Jean returned to Chamberlain where Don worked with his father in the family funeral business. In 1951 Don and Jean purchased Mumper Funeral Home in Newcastle, Wyoming. There they raised four children and owned and operated McColley Funeral Home for 40 years. Jean was a member of Eastern Star, Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel 15, active in P.E.O. Chapter AG, Daughters of the Nile, and the Dirt Daubers Garden Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 62 years. Other than her family, Jean's greatest passion was playing golf. Not only did she love golf, she excelled in the sport, being the Newcastle Country Club Women's Champion for several years, as well as winning championships throughout the region. In 1991 Don and Jean retired, and spent their winters in Lake Havasu Arizona, golfing and making new friends. As time went by, there was one thing that exceeded her love for golf, and that was her grandchildren. A loving, generous woman, Jean was rich in friends. She was an accomplished gardener and cook, and was happiest when entertaining family and friends in her home. In 2007 Don and Jean moved to Westhills Village Retirement Community in Rapid City, SD, where Jean lived until the time of her death. Jean is survived by her husband of 67 years, Don McColley of Rapid City, SD; twin sister, Joyce Yrjanson of Chicago, IL; son, Rick (Ann) McColley of Newcastle, WY; daughter Cathy (Dan) Aldrich of Sheridan, WY; daughter Pam (Chuck) Pzinski of Four Corners, WY; and daughter Deb (Paul) Piana of Newcastle, WY. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Molly McColley, Erin (Scott) Haynes, Joseph (Laura) McColley, Christopher (Lisa) Pzinski, Matthew (Erin) Pzinski, Lacey Rosenau, Brett (Brittney) Cochran; and nine great grandchildren, Trinity Schaefer, Abigail Bradford, Jonnaye Rosenau, Hannah Rosenau, Maddison Rosenau, Lucas Brust, Jayd Cochran, Cole Pzinski and Roberta Jean Haynes. Also surviving Jean is her faithful companion "Buttons". Jean was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters and one grandson, Beau Bradford. A gathering for friends and family will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City, SD. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle, WY with interment to follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle, Wyoming.
