Obituary

Jean Ann Schacher, 94, of Rapid City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 10, 2025, in Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 5:00pm-7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 17, at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont, SD. A vigil/rosary service to begin at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, at Our Lady of the Black Hills with Fr. Andrzej Wyrostek as celebrant. Family and friends are welcome to stay for a luncheon immediately after the service. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.

Jean was born April 12, 1931, in Yankton, SD, to Isabell (Smith) and Peter Slowey. She spent most of her youth in Yankton before moving to Rapid City during her adolescence. Jean graduated from Rapid City Cathedral High School, where she was a cheerleader. Following high school, she enrolled in St. John's McNamara School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse. Post-secondary education was not common for women during that era, and ignited her lifelong passion for service to others in all walks and stages of life.

Jean met Eugene Schacher while attending Rapid City Cathedral High School, and they married shortly before she finished nursing school. Following graduation, Jean and Eugene moved to Fort Campbell, KY, where they lived during Eugene's three years in the Army.

After Eugene's discharge from the Army, they traveled back to South Dakota and lived in several small communities before moving to Colorado.  Jean and Eugene lived in Thorton and Aurora. Jean was a fulltime wife and mother, and continued her service to others by being a Boy Scout leader and fulfilling many roles in her Catholic Parish of St. Pius X.

Following Eugene's death, Jean moved back to South Dakota in 1978 and settled in Blackhawk. Jean engaged in community service and served in several positions at her Catholic Parish of Our Lady of the Black Hills. During this time, she reinstated her nursing license and worked at Fort Mead as a charge nurse in the psychiatric unit and as a private care nurse in other nursing positions.

Jean enjoyed embroidering pillowcases for family and even made several small quilts. The quilt she made with her daughter as a gift for her granddaughter's wedding was entered in the Douglas County Fair, where she won first place for her age group. In her golden years, Jean embraced caring for her grandchildren. She also went on many travel adventures with her daughters nationally and internationally. She also enjoyed traveling to different states to see the leaves change in the fall.

Jean is survived by her sons; Steven Schacher of Rapid City, Joseph (Linda) Schacher of Rapid City, William (Diane) Schacher of Sedalia, CO, daughters; Linda (William Black) Schacher of Abilene, KS, Patty (Larry) Still of Casper, WY, Mary Ann Osthoff of Lakewood, CO, Susan (Patrick) Portillo of Aurora, CO, and Diane (Alex) Scharbauer of Rapid City. Jean was blessed with 9 children, 37 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Eugene Schacher, brothers John and Robert, sisters Isabelle, Patricia, Mary, Delores, and Theresa, daughter Carol Renner, great-granddaughter Rachel Still, great-grandson Noah Schacher, son-in-law William Osthoff, and grandson-in-law Matthew Still.
