Obituary

Jeanne Josephine McLean, formerly of Rapid City, died peacefully on January 19th in Fredericksburg, Texas.  She was born on November 13,1928, in Agar, Sully Co. South Dakota to Albert "Bert" Jonathan Archer and Henrietta "Etta" McGee Archer.

At age five, Jeanne and her siblings were orphaned when Bert and Etta died of influenza. (They died twelve days apart) The two older sisters, Eleanor and Alice, were raised in Vancouver, WA.  Jeanne and her brothers, Kenneth and Dwayne, remained at the family farm, raised by an aunt, Maude Archer.

Jeanne excelled in school while also working on the farm for her uncle, Ed Archer.  It was said that when Jeanne married Cal, Ed lost his best hired hand.

After high school, Jeanne graduated from normal schooling and became a country schoolteacher. On December 24, 1950, she married Calvin McLean in Gettysburg, SD.  Days after their wedding, Calvin was called to serve in Korea.  Jeanne continued teaching and working on the farm.  Upon Calvin's discharge, they farmed in Sully Co. for seven years.  During this time, two daughters were born: Vicki Jo and Tami Lea.

In 1960, seeking better opportunities, they put down roots in Rapid City, SD, and purchased a motel.  Over the next 40+ years, Jeanne relished being a business owner, tending to the family, and raising her girls.  She actively participated in the hotel/motel association and PTA.  Jeanne earned a master's degree in education and taught another twelve years.

In retirement, Jeanne and Cal became "Winter Texans"; dancing, playing cards, and making new lifetime friends.  They made Texas home in 2005.

Jeanne is survived by daughters, Vicki (Mike) Robbins, Tami (Blair) Bishop; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Leona Archer; cherished friends.

Jeanne lived a full life.  She graced family and friends with her warmth, humor, and love.
