Jerome Bernell Shroll Bernie, 83, Rapid City, passed away Tuesday March 8, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Auxillary Hospice House. Bernie was born July 21, 1927 in Kadoka South Dakota to Raymond and Helen Shroll. He attended high school in Rapid City and graduated in 1945, immediately after high school (the end of WWII) he enlisted in the United States Army he also served 1 tour in the Korean War and ended his military career in his favorite place, the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He attended SDSU and graduated with his masters degree in pharmacy in 1956. He worked as a pharmacist in many places such has Martin, Huron, Sioux City, Sundance WY, Rapid City, Sturgis and finally at Faith. He loved being a pharmacist and did everything he could to ensure his patrons had their medications. He also was an active member of the noon optimist club in Rapid City. Bernie married his high school sweetheart, Audrey Joens, on August 20, 1950 and started their family soon thereafter; they had three children Victoria, Cynthia and William. He was a very hard worker his entire life, he started working at a very young age at the Rapid City Journal and worked hard until he retired when he was well into his seventies. He believed strongly in education encouraged all of his children and grandchildren to continue theirs. He also was an active member of the Catholic Church where he started in Kadoka as an altar boy. He also was a lector at Blessed Sacrament in Rapid City for many years. We all loved him greatly and admired his determination. We also appreciated his sense of humor, for example, if anyone asked him how he was doing he would reply pretty good for a young fellow. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Audrey or Auddy as Bernie called her, his 3 children; Victoria Leonard of St. Paul MN, Cynthia Angel (Craig Angel) of Rapid City, and William Shroll (Linda Shroll) of Watertown SD; his sisters Arlys Haight and Cheryl Pfitzer both of Rapid City, his grandchildren Ryan Leonard (Ann), Jennifer Leonard (Chris), Melanie Schumacher (Ben), David Angel, Amie Williams (Michael), Jim Shroll (Paige) and Dylan Shroll; as well as all of his 11 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Helen, his brother Raymond Shroll and his sister Peggy McDaniels, as well as other family and friends. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM, Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Church. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM, Friday March 11, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Fr. Andrzej Wyrostek presiding. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis on Friday at 1:00 PM with Military Honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. A memorial has been established.
