RAPID CITY- Jerald W. Jerry' Harder, 87, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 24, 2014. Jerry was born on October 30, 1926, to Elmer and Sophia (Laur) Harder in Burke, SD. He was raised in Gregory, where he graduated from high school in 1944. He entered the Navy in 1944 and served for 2 years. Following his discharge he attended SDSU in Brookings. He received a B. S. Degree in History and Science in 1951. He taught history and coached at Philip from 1952-54. He married Jean Ann Joyce of Philip on October 20, 1952. They moved to Wall in 1954, where he started his long career in banking with Underwood State Bank, now known as Western Bank. He moved to Rapid City in 1957 to take a position with the Rapid City National Bank. He was in charge of the Bookkeeping Department. Jerry was promoted to Vice President and managed the Western Bank at Baken Park for 10 years before transferring to the main office as a commercial loan officer. He retired after 33 years of service. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge 1187 Golf Association, past officer of Westside Kiwanis and South Canyon PTA. He was active in starting the YMCA swim team and coached girls' softball and was a former Jaycee. He was a devoted father to his five children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Jean Ann, Rapid City; a son, Bob (Trish) Harder, Worland, Wyo; 4 daughters, Nancy (Tom) Huwe, Rapid City, Shelley English, Council Bluffs, IA, Tracy (Guy) Mereness, Sycamore, Ill. and Elizabeth Harder, Sioux Falls ; two brothers, Jim (Gladys) Harder, Winner, Tom (Shirley) Harder, Newcastle, Wy, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Debra Kay, brother, Bill Harder, and a son-in-law, Timothy English. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 28, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Inurnment, with military honors rendered by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
